Too…many…pets?

Too many pets? Is there even such a thing?! Here at PetDoors.com we understand that sometimes one pet just doesn’t cut it (after all, Fido needs a friend, right?). Sometimes an innocent visit to the local animal shelter turns from ‘just looking’, to walking out the door ten minutes later with a new furry friend wrapped in your arms. And you just have to check out that adoption event next month…and the month after that…

Soon enough your clothes are permanently decorated with a layer of dog hair, you can’t walk ten feet without tripping on a cat toy, and all the while your bank account is slowly dwindling.

Such is the struggle of the avid animal lover. After all, isn’t pet hair-coated clothing the latest Fall Fashion Trend? And who needs walkable floors space, anyways? If we’re being frank, these things really don’t matter to us when we think about the joy pets bring to our lives.

There is actually scientific research that considers the physical and mental health benefits of pet ownership. According to the National Institutes of Health, interacting with animals can lower blood pressure and reduce levels of cortisol (a stress-related hormone). Dogs also need daily walks, so they get us off the couch and out into the fresh air to stretch our legs.

Every pet owner knows that nothing compares to the feeling of walking through the front door at the end of a long day to see your dog bouncing with excitement as though they haven’t seen you in years. So, it’s understandable that we might want a couple more pets to add to this joy.

It’s no secret that lots of pets = lots of work. For the multi-pet household, a Pet Door eases some of the time spent playing ‘doorman’ to your dogs and cats and gives them the freedom to come and go on their own terms!

Any ardent cat lovers out there? Check out the SureFlap Microchip Cat Door for an electronic cat door that programs up to 32 different cats! It uses microchip technology to grant access to your cats (all 32 of them? don’t worry, we won’t judge), keeping unwanted critters out.

Sadly, there may come a time when filling your life with animals turns from a stress-reliever to a stress-inducer (for both you and your pets). If you ever find that you are struggling to find enough hours in the day to properly take care of all your fur-babies, it’s probably time to consider whether you are giving each of your pets the attention and care they deserve.

However altruistic our aims of rescuing pets in need of a home might feel, the most important consideration is whether we have the time and resources to look after another four-legged friend.

If you are absolutely certain that you have the time to care for another pet, go ahead, adopt that furry little guy you fell in love with instantly! And let the chaos (plus lots of laughter and love) ensue!
